Recover lost root password

I've written abou this before, but nixCraft has a nice post on how to reset your root password if you forget it, using the new FreeBSD boot screen. Of course, if you done the tweak I point out here, to disable single user boot, you are, I think, pretty screwed. I believe I've read somewhere you can use a partition editor to get or reset the password, maybe by hand tweaking /etc/passwd, but don't hold my feet to the fire for that!

Well, if you did the hack then you got to undo it first.
Take a live CD, mount the hd partition and reset the console login to secure.

Good idea! That would work. Of course, a *really* secure machine wouldn't have any removable media to boot from...

Yup thats very true, thats the reason why I have that USB -> SATA/IDE kit (mines is this one: http://www.usbgeek.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=0590 ) in my laptop case, together with my leatherman and cybertool it's the answer to all of these: "My PC/Laptop doesn't turn on anymore but there is that file I really, really, REALLY need, and yes indeed that file is so important that I only have it there."
